Amounts

The amount depends on how late you reach your destination and on the size of the airline. A large carrier carried 2,000,000 passengers or more worldwide in each of the last 2 years.

3 hours to under 6CAD 400CAD 125
6 hours to under 9CAD 700CAD 250
9 hours or moreCAD 1,000CAD 500

When it applies

  • The flight starts or ends in Canada, on any airline.
  • The delay is 3 hours or more at arrival, or the airline cancelled with 14 days of notice or less.
  • The cause was within the airline’s control and was not required for safety. The airline makes this call first.

Weather, air traffic control and most outside strikes fall outside the airline’s control. A fault found outside a scheduled inspection can be a safety matter. Ask for the reason in writing.

Large and small carriers

The Canadian Transportation Agency lists these as large in its January 2025 notice: Air Canada incl. Jazz and Rouge, WestJet, Sunwing, Air Transat, Porter, Flair. We read that notice through a secondary summary, so confirm the list on the agency site. Sunwing has reportedly stopped flying. For a foreign airline we could not confirm the size, so the calculator shows the small figure as the base and the large figure as the upper figure.

Denied boarding

For involuntary denied boarding the amounts are CAD 900, CAD 1,800, CAD 2,400 depending on how late you arrive. The calculator does not compute these. See the denied boarding guide.

Where the trip ended: the final destination.

The operating airline, not the one on the ticket. A boarding pass or the flight status page names it.

What happened

At the final destination, when the aircraft door opened.

We read this to explain the result. We never decide whether it counts as extraordinary.

Carried into the claim letter. It does not change the amount.

Pending changes

The Canadian Transportation Agency proposed changes to the regulations in December 2024. We found no final change on 10 October 2026, and we could not confirm this. Check the agency site for the current rules.

Questions about Canada APPR

Who decides whether the delay was in the airline’s control?
The airline decides first and tells you its reason. You can disagree and take the matter to the Canadian Transportation Agency. Hours Late does not decide it.
Can an airline refuse because EU261 or UK261 also applies?
The regulations say a carrier may not refuse APPR compensation because another regime also applies. We do not promise that two payments can be collected for one disruption.
What is the claim deadline?
Not verified yet. We found no deadline in the sources we read. Check the Canadian Transportation Agency before you rely on any date.

Information, not advice

Hours Late is not a law firm and not a claims company. It does not file claims for you. The results are estimates from published rules and the details you enter. They are not legal advice. Airlines and courts decide each case.
