Methodology: how the numbers are made
Updated
Distance
The great circle (haversine) distance between the two airport coordinates, with an Earth radius of 6,371.0088 km. The figure is approximate: the Regulation measures between airports by the great circle method and publishes no reference point convention. Distances show in kilometers and miles.
Which rule set applies
- EU261: the flight departs from an airport in EU261 territory, on any airline, or arrives there on an airline with an EU operating license.
- UK261: the flight departs from the UK, or arrives in the UK on a UK or EU airline, or arrives in the EU from outside it on a UK airline.
- Canada APPR: the flight starts or ends in Canada, on any airline. The size of the airline sets the amount.
- US refunds: the flight starts or ends in the US or a US territory. No cash compensation for delays.
Where more than one applies, the result shows all of them and says you can claim under one. Canada’s regulations forbid refusing a claim because another regime also applies. We do not promise that two payments can be collected.
Amounts
Every amount is read from the rules data. EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 apply for EU261 by distance band. The distance is not rounded before the band test.
Extraordinary circumstances
We read the reason you give. For weather, air traffic control and outside strikes the result says the claim may be excused. We never decide it. The airline and, if needed, a court do.
Points we could not confirm
- National claim time limits come from claims-company pages and the Commission guidelines only. Belgium, Portugal and Sweden are not shown. Canada has no deadline in our sources.
- A provisional agreement of 15 June 2026 on an EU261 reform is reported in secondary sources. We use the rules in force.
- Flights to and from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are covered, but whether they count as inside the EU for the EUR 400 rule is not confirmed. The result carries a check flag.
- The Canadian large carrier list was read through a secondary summary. Amendments proposed in December 2024 were not found final on 10 October 2026.
- US denied boarding amounts are not researched.
- The 3 to 4 hour half rule on long flights follows the Commission guidelines. We rate it medium confidence.
The data
4,008 airports from OurAirports, 154 airlines, 37 rule records and 5 claims companies, read on 10/10/2026. See the data page. The airline list is chosen for relevance, not by passenger numbers.
